How to Prepare a Professional Product Photoshoot

Steps to prepare a product shoot that produces selling images: from product selection to moodboard prep and product staging.

A good product photo sells, a bad one repels. The difference is 90% prep and 10% shooting. This guide gives you the complete prep plan.

Section 1

One Week Before: Brief & Moodboard

Write a clear brief: which channels will host the photos (store, Instagram, ads)? What feeling do you want (premium, functional, emotional)?

Prepare a moodboard with 10-15 reference photos from the web reflecting your desired style. This saves hours of debate on shoot day.

Section 2

Three Days Before: Product Prep

Clean each product with a microfiber cloth. Fingerprints and dust amplify under studio lighting.

Prepare 2-3 copies of each product. Shooting consumes products (especially food and paper-packaged goods).

Section 3

Shoot Day: Crew & Gear

Make sure you have: photographer, lighting assistant, stylist, and ideally a brand owner for real-time approval.

Set a written schedule per product (~20-30 min per setup). Chaos eats up the day.
